Bizarre events
October 8 2006

We’ve searched far and wide…across the kingdom…from Lands End to John O’Groats, Blackfriars to Bolton, Newquay to Newcastle to find you the very oddest event, the one that will make you say ‘what?’ We thought about bog snorkelling but it was all too common in the right part of Wales. We considered Richmond’s annual chucking-a-mobile-phone-in-the-Thames event but thought it just a tad too eco unfriendly and not nearly ancient sounding enough. We did some serious research in to the Hare Pie Championships of Hallaton before realising that only people that lived within five miles of your faithful Events Editor would have the foggiest what we were on about.

Then, in between conversations about Michael Palin’s man-bag, the relative merits of The Professionals and whether the popularity of the foil covered biscuit is purely psychological, we hit on just the thing. ‘Fancy having a giggle trying to write up the World Pea Throwing Competition?’ asked Senior Editor Mandy, fresh from her swing dance class with Only Fools and Horses’ Trigger. The challenge was set, the search was over. We had our strange event, we knew that you, dear reader, would be clicking on to this very page thinking to yourself ‘what is this pea throwing of which you speak? I must know more! Do they use a freshly podded pea? Would a frozen petit pois be more aerodynamic?’

Held at the Lewes Arms pub the World Pea Throwing Competition is held in aid of the Sussex Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus every October. Sponsored by Birds Eye it sees the public competing to see, um, who can throw a pea the farthest. Obviously. If you decide to try your luck you’ll be up against last year’s champion Steve Foster, who managed a spiffing 33.7m, although to really go down in history the world record of 38.7m, set by Danny Tear, must be beaten.

Peas head down and try your luck.
